The Irish abortion case decided last week brought back memories for me. For many years, I’d fought against what I thought of as the double standards and the hypocrisy in the law on abortion in Ireland – and the view the Irish took of abortion.
Reflecting on that line, and building on it, I’ve been thinking some more about double standards. And about – oddly – maybe counter-intiuitively – their role in producing progress towards a Human Rights culture. And it’s through the Irish case that I reflect today, in this the eleventh track, on the role of double standards in making Human Rights progress.
